About the Coordinate Converter

The coordinate converter changes GPS coordinates between decimal degrees (DD), used by Google Maps and most GPS devices, and degrees, minutes and seconds (DMS), used on paper maps and in surveying. One degree is 60 minutes and one minute is 60 seconds; the hemisphere (N/S, E/W) is shown by the sign in decimal degrees.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose DD → DMS or DMS → DD.
  2. 2Enter latitude and longitude.
  3. 3Read the converted coordinates.
  4. 4Copy, share or print the result with the buttons below it.

Worked example

40.7128° N, 74.0060° W (New York City) is 40° 42′ 46.1″ N, 74° 0′ 21.6″ W in DMS.

How it works

Decimal Degrees (DD)

Used by most GPS devices, Google Maps, and digital mapping. Example: 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W (New York City).

Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS)

Traditional geographic format. Example: 40° 42' 46.1" N, 74° 0' 21.6" W.

Formula

DD = Degrees + (Minutes ÷ 60) + (Seconds ÷ 3600)

Common use cases

  • Entering coordinates from a paper map into a GPS app
  • Surveying and geocaching
  • Converting coordinates in documents
