About the Pace Calculator

The pace calculator turns a distance and finishing time into running pace and average speed. Pace — minutes per kilometre or per mile — is how runners usually think about effort, while speed in km/h or mph is how treadmills display it. Enter the distance in kilometres or miles and the time in hours, minutes and seconds, and the tool returns both. It is useful for setting race goals, planning training runs and checking whether a target time is realistic for your current fitness.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter the distance and choose kilometres or miles.
  2. 2Enter your finishing time in hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. 3Press Calculate to see your pace per unit of distance and your average speed.

Worked example

running 5 km in 25:00 is a pace of 5:00 per kilometre, or 12 km/h. The same run expressed in miles is about 8:03 per mile.

How it works

How it works

Pace is total time divided by distance. Speed is distance divided by time.

Who it is for

Runners, walkers and coaches setting race targets or training paces.

Why it helps

Pace is the number you can check on a watch during a run, so translating goals into pace makes them practical.

Common use cases

  • Finding the pace needed for a 5K, 10K or half-marathon goal
  • Setting a treadmill speed that matches an outdoor pace
  • Comparing your pace across races of different distances

Frequently asked questions
