About the FIP Calculator
The FIP calculator estimates Fielding Independent Pitching, which judges a pitcher only on outcomes they control: home runs, walks and strikeouts. FIP = (13 × HR + 3 × BB − 2 × K) ÷ IP + a league constant (3.20 here) that puts it on the same scale as ERA. It removes the effect of defence and luck on balls in play.
How to use it
- 1Enter home runs allowed.
- 2Enter walks and strikeouts.
- 3Enter innings pitched and press Calculate.
Worked example
15 home runs, 40 walks and 180 strikeouts in 180 innings give (195 + 120 − 360) ÷ 180 + 3.20 ≈ 2.95.
How it works
Formula
FIP = ((13×HR + 3×BB − 2×K) ÷ IP) + 3.20
Common use cases
- Separating pitching skill from defence
- Predicting future ERA
- Fantasy baseball analysis
Frequently asked questions
A:FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) estimates what a pitcher's ERA "should" be based only on events he directly controls: HRs, BBs, and Ks.
A:FIP = ((13×HR + 3×BB − 2×K) ÷ IP) + 3.20. The constant ~3.20 normalizes FIP to league ERA.
A:Below 3.00 is elite; 3.00–3.75 is above average; 3.75–4.50 is average; above 4.50 is below average.
A:ERA includes all earned runs; FIP only counts pitcher-controlled events, making it less influenced by defensive quality.
A:If ERA > FIP the pitcher was unlucky; if ERA < FIP the pitcher may have benefited from great defense or luck.
