About the Magic Number Calculator
The magic number calculator shows how many combined wins by the leading team and losses by its closest rival are needed to clinch a division or playoff spot. With both teams having played the same number of games, magic number = games remaining − lead in wins + 1. When it reaches zero, the leader has clinched.
How to use it
- 1Enter the leading team’s games remaining.
- 2Enter the lead over the second-place team, in games.
- 3Press Calculate to see the magic number.
Worked example
a team with 20 games left and a 6-game lead has a magic number of 20 − 6 + 1 = 15.
How it works
Formula
Magic Number = Games Remaining − Lead in Wins + 1
