About the Data Storage Converter

The data storage converter changes values between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes using binary multiples, where each step is 1,024 times the previous one. That is how Windows and most operating systems report file and disk sizes, which is why a “1 TB” drive shows about 931 GB once installed — manufacturers count in powers of 1,000. Use the byte converter if you need the decimal (SI) standard.

How to use it

  1. 1Type the value you want to convert.
  2. 2Choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you want (for example GB to MB).
  3. 3The result updates as you type; use the swap button to reverse the direction.
  4. 4Copy or share the result with the buttons below it.

Worked example

4 GB × 1,024 = 4,096 MB, and 1 TB = 1,024 GB = 1,048,576 MB in binary units.

How it works

How it works

Data units use binary multiples where 1 KB = 1024 bytes.

Common use cases

  • Checking whether files fit on a USB drive or in a cloud plan
  • Understanding the size your computer reports for a disk
  • Estimating backup sizes
