About the Fraction Calculator
The fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides two fractions and returns the answer in lowest terms. For addition and subtraction it finds a common denominator; for multiplication it multiplies the numerators and denominators; for division it multiplies by the reciprocal of the second fraction. The result is then simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. It is useful for homework, recipes and measurements in inches.
How to use it
- 1Enter the numerator and denominator of the first fraction.
- 2Choose the operation: +, −, × or ÷.
- 3Enter the numerator and denominator of the second fraction.
- 4Press Calculate to see the simplified result.
Worked example
1/2 + 1/3 uses the common denominator 6, giving 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.
How it works
How it works
Fractions are combined using a common denominator (for + and −) or by multiplying across, then reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor.
Who it is for
Students, teachers, cooks scaling recipes and anyone working with imperial measurements.
Why it helps
It shows the simplified answer instantly and avoids common-denominator mistakes.
Common use cases
- Checking fraction homework
- Scaling recipe quantities
- Adding measurements such as 3/8 in + 5/16 in
Frequently asked questions
