Convert composite units (speed) by multiplying conversion factors. Use this to practice dimensional analysis chain calculations.
Result
88.0000 feet/second
Conversion chain: 60 miles/hour × 1.466667 = 88.0000 feet/second
This tool provides general unit conversions for everyday and educational use. For regulated, legal, or scientific applications, verify conversion factors against the applicable official standard.
About the Dimensional Analysis Calculator
The dimensional analysis calculator converts speeds by chaining conversion factors and shows each step, so you can see how units cancel. The method multiplies by fractions equal to one — such as 1,609.344 m / 1 mi — until only the wanted units remain. It is a core skill in chemistry and physics classes.
How to use it
- 1Enter the value.
- 2Choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you want.
- 3Read the result and the chain of conversion factors.
Worked example
60 mi/h × 1,609.344 m/mi × 1 h/3,600 s = 26.82 m/s.
How it works
What is dimensional analysis?
Dimensional analysis is a method to convert units by multiplying by conversion factors that equal 1 (e.g. 1 = 3.28084 ft/m). Chaining these fractions eliminates unwanted units.
Common use cases
- Learning dimensional analysis in science classes
- Checking unit conversions step by step
- Physics problem solving
Frequently asked questions
A:60 × 5280 ÷ 3600 = 88 ft/s. Or: 60 mph × 0.44704/0.3048 = 88 ft/s.
A:It prevents unit errors in engineering and science calculations. The Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999 due to a lb-force vs N unit error.
