About the Gematria Calculator
The gematria calculator adds up the letter values of English text using several ciphers: standard (A = 1 … Z = 26), ordinal, reverse (A = 26 … Z = 1) and Pythagorean (digits 1–9). Gematria is a traditional practice of assigning numbers to letters, studied in linguistics, history and numerology. The calculator simply performs the arithmetic.
How to use it
- 1Type a word or phrase.
- 2Choose the cipher.
- 3Read the total and the value of each letter.
Worked example
in the standard cipher, HELLO = 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52.
How it works
What is Gematria?
Gematria assigns numerical values to letters. In Standard English gematria: A=1, B=2, ..., Z=26. The total of all letter values is the gematria number of the word.
Common use cases
- Exploring word puzzles and number patterns
- Studying historical letter-number systems
- Comparing cipher results
