About the Internet Speed Calculator
The internet speed calculator estimates how long a file takes to download at a given connection speed. Connection speeds are quoted in megabits per second (Mbps) while file sizes are in megabytes (MB), and there are 8 bits in a byte, so time = file size × 8 ÷ speed. Real downloads are usually somewhat slower because of network overhead.
How to use it
- 1Enter your connection speed in Mbps.
- 2Enter the file size in MB.
- 3Read the estimated download time and the speed in MB/s.
Worked example
a 4,000 MB (4 GB) file at 50 Mbps takes 4,000 × 8 ÷ 50 = 640 seconds, or about 10 minutes 40 seconds.

Note: 8 bits = 1 byte. Speed is in megabits per second; file sizes are in megabytes.
