About the Joule to Volt Converter

The joule to volt converter uses the relationship E = Q × V: energy in joules equals charge in coulombs multiplied by potential difference in volts. It finds the voltage from energy and charge, or the energy from charge and voltage. Joules and volts are different quantities, so a conversion is only possible when the charge is known.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose to find voltage or energy.
  2. 2Enter the energy (or voltage) and the charge in coulombs.
  3. 3Read the result.
  4. 4Copy, share or print the result with the buttons below it.

Worked example

100 J delivered by a charge of 10 C means a potential difference of 100 ÷ 10 = 10 V.

How it works

Formula

E (J) = Q (C) × V (V)

V = E ÷ Q · Q = E ÷ V

Units

1 Joule = 1 Coulomb × 1 Volt · 1 eV = 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ J (electron-volt).

Common use cases

  • Physics and electronics homework
  • Understanding capacitor and battery energy
  • Electrical calculations

Frequently asked questions

A:1 J = 1 V when charge Q = 1 Coulomb. Voltage depends on both energy AND charge.
