About the Latitude Longitude to UTM Converter

The latitude longitude to UTM converter turns WGS84 coordinates into Universal Transverse Mercator zone, easting and northing. UTM divides the world into 60 north–south zones, each 6° of longitude wide, and gives positions in metres, which makes distance calculations simple. It is the standard grid for topographic maps, GIS and many search-and-rescue services.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter latitude in decimal degrees (negative for south).
  2. 2Enter longitude in decimal degrees (negative for west).
  3. 3Read the UTM zone, hemisphere, easting and northing in metres.

Worked example

New York City at 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W lies in UTM zone 18N, with an easting of about 583,960 m and a northing of about 4,507,350 m.

How it works

Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)

UTM divides the Earth into 60 zones of 6° longitude each, numbered 1–60 from west to east. Each zone uses a transverse Mercator projection. Coordinates are given as Easting (metres east of zone's central meridian + 500,000 false easting) and Northing (metres from equator; 10,000,000 m added for southern hemisphere).

Reference ellipsoid

This calculator uses the WGS84 ellipsoid: a = 6,378,137 m, 1/f = 298.257223563.

Accuracy

Results are accurate to within ≈1 m for all valid latitudes (−80° to 84°). Polar regions use UPS projection instead.

Common use cases

  • Plotting positions on topographic maps
  • GIS and surveying work
  • Search-and-rescue and field navigation

Frequently asked questions

A:UTM is used in topographic mapping, military navigation (MGRS), GIS systems, and land surveying. It is the standard for many national coordinate systems.
