About the Mesh to Micron Converter
The mesh to micron converter gives the opening size, in microns, of a standard test sieve for a given mesh number according to ASTM E11. Mesh number counts the openings per linear inch, so a higher number means smaller openings. Because the wire thickness varies between sieve sizes, the relationship is not a simple formula, so the tool uses the standard sieve table.
How to use it
- 1Enter the mesh number of the sieve.
- 2Read the nominal opening in microns and millimetres.
- 3Use the reference table to compare neighbouring sieve sizes.
Worked example
a No. 100 sieve has openings of about 150 µm (0.15 mm), while a No. 200 sieve has openings of about 75 µm.
How it works
What is mesh?
Mesh number refers to the number of openings per linear inch in a wire-woven sieve. Higher mesh numbers = finer openings = smaller particles pass through.
Standard used
ASTM E11 — Standard Specification for Woven Wire Test Sieve Cloth and Test Sieves.
Applications
- Particle size analysis in pharmaceuticals
- Aggregate grading in civil engineering
- Powder metallurgy
- Food processing and milling
Common use cases
- Particle size analysis in labs
- Choosing sieves for powders and aggregates
- Reading grading specifications
Frequently asked questions
A:No — it is roughly inversely proportional but wire diameter deviations make it non-linear. Always use the ASTM table for precision work.
A:Below mesh 635 (20 μm), sieves are not typically used; membrane filtration is used instead.
