Conversions based on typical natural gas calorific value (~10.55 kWh/m³). Actual values vary by gas composition.
This tool provides general unit conversions for everyday and educational use. For regulated, legal, or scientific applications, verify conversion factors against the applicable official standard.
About the Natural Gas Converter
The natural gas converter changes between volume units (cubic metres, cubic feet, MCF) and energy units (therms, BTU, MMBtu, kWh, MWh and gigajoules). Gas is metered by volume but billed by energy, so suppliers apply a heating (calorific) value; the tool uses the U.S. average of 1,037 BTU per cubic foot, about 10.73 kWh per cubic metre. Your bill shows the exact factor for your supply.
How to use it
- 1Type the value you want to convert.
- 2Choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you want (for example cubic metres to kWh).
- 3The result updates as you type; use the swap button to reverse the direction.
- 4Copy or share the result with the buttons below it.
Worked example
100 m³ of natural gas ≈ 1,073 kWh, or about 36.6 US therms.
How it works
Reference values (typical natural gas)
1 m³ = 35.31 ft³. Energy conversions assume a heating value of 1,037 BTU per cubic foot (the U.S. average), so 1 m³ ≈ 36,600 BTU ≈ 10.73 kWh ≈ 0.366 therms, and 1 MCF ≈ 1.037 MMBtu. Actual heating value varies by gas composition and supplier; your bill states the factor used.
Common use cases
- Checking gas bills
- Comparing heating fuel costs
- Energy and engineering calculations
Frequently asked questions
A:Typically 10–11 kWh/m³ depending on calorific value. This calculator uses 10.55 kWh/m³ (UK typical gross calorific value).
A:1 therm = 100,000 BTU ≈ 29.3 kWh. At a typical 1,037 BTU per cubic foot that is about 96 ft³ or 2.73 m³ of gas. Therms are used in US gas billing.
