About the Scale Calculator

The scale calculator converts between distances on a map, model or drawing and the real distances they represent. A scale of 1:50,000 means one unit on the map equals 50,000 of the same unit in reality, so 1 cm represents 500 m. The tool also finds the scale when you know both distances.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose map → real, real → map or find the scale.
  2. 2Enter the scale and the known distance.
  3. 3Choose the unit and read the result.
  4. 4Copy, share or print the result with the buttons below it.

Worked example

on a 1:25,000 hiking map, 4 cm represents 4 × 25,000 = 100,000 cm, or 1 km.

How it works

Scale formula

Scale = Real Distance ÷ Map Distance (both in the same unit)

A scale of 1:50,000 means 1 cm on the map = 50,000 cm = 500 m in reality.

Frequently asked questions

A:1 unit on the map represents 25,000 of the same unit in reality. 1 cm = 250 m; 1 inch = 25,000 inches ≈ 0.395 miles.
