About the Unix Time Converter
The Unix time converter turns Unix timestamps — the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970 — into readable dates in UTC, ISO 8601 and your local time, and converts dates back into timestamps. Unix time is used by operating systems, databases, log files and APIs.
How to use it
- 1Choose Unix → date or date → Unix.
- 2Enter the timestamp or pick a date and time; press “Now” for the current time.
- 3Read the result in UTC, ISO 8601 and local time.
- 4Copy, share or print the result with the buttons below it.
Worked example
the timestamp 1,700,000,000 corresponds to 14 November 2023 at 22:13:20 UTC.
How it works
What is Unix time?
Unix time (also POSIX time or epoch time) counts the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC. It is used in virtually all operating systems, databases, and APIs.
Formula
Date = new Date(unixTimestamp × 1000) (multiply by 1000 to convert seconds to milliseconds for JavaScript).
Common use cases
- Reading timestamps in logs and databases
- Debugging APIs
- Converting dates for programming
