About the Water Intake Calculator
The water intake calculator estimates how much fluid you need each day. It starts from 35 mL per kilogram of body weight, then adjusts for activity level and climate and adds extra for exercise time, caffeine and conditions such as pregnancy or breastfeeding. The result is total fluid, which includes water from other drinks and food; about 20% of daily water usually comes from food. Thirst and pale-yellow urine are good everyday checks. People with kidney or heart conditions may need to limit fluids and should follow medical advice.
How to use it
- 1Enter your body weight, age and sex.
- 2Choose your usual activity level and the climate you live in.
- 3Select any condition that applies, such as pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- 4Enter your daily exercise time and cups of caffeinated drinks.
- 5Press Calculate to see your recommended daily intake.
Worked example
the base requirement for a 70 kg person is 70 × 35 = 2,450 mL a day before adjustments. Moving to a more active level, a hot climate or adding daily exercise increases the total.
How it works
Formula
Base = Weight (kg) × 35 ml
Multiplied by an activity factor (1.0–1.5) and climate factor (1.0–1.2), then additional amounts are added for condition, exercise, and caffeine intake.
Activity multipliers
Sedentary ×1.0 · Lightly Active ×1.1 · Moderately Active ×1.2 · Very Active ×1.3 · Extra Active ×1.5
Climate multipliers
Cool ×1.0 · Warm ×1.1 · Hot ×1.2
Additional amounts
Pregnant +300 ml · Breastfeeding +500 ml · Illness +750 ml · 30 min exercise +400 ml · 60 min +800 ml · 90+ min +1200 ml · each cup of caffeine +100 ml
Who it is for
Anyone who wants a personal daily water target, especially active people and those in hot climates.
Why it helps
Fluid needs vary with body size, activity and heat, so a personal estimate is more useful than a fixed eight glasses.
Common use cases
- Setting a daily hydration goal
- Planning extra fluid on training days
- Adjusting intake during hot weather
Frequently asked questions
A:Needs vary by weight, activity, climate and health. A common starting point is 35 ml per kg of body weight, adjusted for lifestyle factors.
A:Coffee and tea contribute to fluid intake, but caffeine has a mild diuretic effect. The calculator adds 100 ml per cup to compensate.
A:Yes. 30 minutes of exercise adds approximately 400 ml; 90+ minutes adds 1,200 ml to your daily requirement.
A:Hot weather increases sweat and evaporation, raising fluid needs by 10–20%.
