Total time completed on the Bruce treadmill protocol

This tool provides general sports and fitness estimates for educational purposes only. It is not medical advice — consult a physician before starting or intensifying training, especially if you have a cardiovascular condition.

About the Bruce Protocol METs Calculator

The Bruce protocol calculator converts the time completed on the Bruce treadmill test into estimated VO₂ max and METs using the Foster (1984) equation. The test increases speed and incline every three minutes until exhaustion and is widely used in cardiology. It should only be performed under medical supervision.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter the total treadmill time in minutes (for example 10.5).
  2. 2Press Calculate to see VO₂ max, METs and fitness level.

Worked example

12 minutes gives a VO₂ max of 14.76 − 1.379 × 12 + 0.451 × 144 − 0.012 × 1,728 ≈ 42.4 ml/kg/min, or about 12.1 METs.

How it works

Formula

VO₂ max (ml/kg/min) = 14.76 − 1.379T + 0.451T² − 0.012T³, where T is the total treadmill time in minutes (Foster et al., 1984). METs = VO₂ max ÷ 3.5. The equation was derived for adults completing the standard Bruce protocol without holding the handrails.

Common use cases

  • Understanding a stress-test report
  • Tracking aerobic fitness
  • Exercise physiology study

Frequently asked questions

A:A graded treadmill test where speed and incline increase every three minutes until exhaustion; total time predicts aerobic capacity.
