Your weight alone does not tell the whole story about your health.

A person who weighs 80 kg, for example, could have a very different health profile depending on their height, body composition, age, and other factors.

That's where Body Mass Index (BMI) can provide a useful starting point.

BMI uses your height and weight to calculate a number that can help classify weight status in adults. It is widely used as a screening measure, although it should not be treated as a complete diagnosis of health or body fat.

What Is BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a numerical value calculated using a person's weight relative to their height.

For adults, the standard metric formula is:

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters²

For example, if someone weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 meters tall:

BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.9

This falls within the standard healthy-weight BMI range for adults.

The CDC and NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute use BMI as a screening measure for adult weight status.

BMI Categories for Adults

For adults, commonly used BMI categories are:

BMIWeight Category
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5–24.9Healthy weight
25.0–29.9Overweight
30.0 or higherObesity
These adult BMI categories are used by the NHLBI and CDC. BMI interpretation for children and teenagers is different and uses age- and sex-specific growth charts and percentiles.

What Does Your BMI Result Mean?

A BMI result can provide a useful initial indication of whether your weight falls within a commonly used range for your height. However, it should not be interpreted in isolation.

BMI below 18.5

This falls into the underweight category for adults. Being underweight may be associated with nutritional or health concerns in some people, but BMI alone cannot determine the underlying cause.

BMI from 18.5 to 24.9

This is generally classified as the healthy-weight range for adults. However, being within this range does not automatically mean that every aspect of your health is optimal.

BMI from 25.0 to 29.9

This falls into the overweight category. A higher BMI can be associated with increased health risks in some people, but additional factors should be considered.

BMI of 30 or higher

This falls within the obesity category under standard adult BMI classifications. A healthcare professional can provide a more complete assessment when needed.

Why BMI Is Useful

BMI is popular because it is simple to calculate, fast, inexpensive, based on height and weight, useful for population-level screening, and easy to track over time.

Healthcare professionals commonly use BMI as one part of assessing overweight and obesity in adults. For an individual, however, BMI is only one piece of the overall picture.

BMI Does Not Directly Measure Body Fat

This is one of the most important things to understand about BMI. BMI is not a direct measurement of body fat.

It uses height and weight rather than measuring body composition directly. This means two people can have the same BMI but very different amounts or distributions of muscle and body fat.

For example, someone with substantial muscle mass may have a relatively high BMI without having the same body-fat profile as another person with the same BMI.

The NHLBI specifically describes BMI as a screening tool, not a direct diagnosis of body fatness.

BMI and Waist Circumference

For a more complete assessment, BMI can be considered alongside other measurements. One example is waist circumference, which can provide additional information about body-fat distribution.

The NHLBI notes that measures such as waist circumference can be used alongside BMI when evaluating overweight and obesity. This is particularly important because where body fat is stored can matter for health, not just how much a person weighs.

BMI for Children and Teenagers

Adult BMI categories should not simply be applied to children and teenagers.

For people ages 2–19, BMI is interpreted using BMI-for-age percentiles, which take age and sex into account. The CDC uses growth charts for this purpose.

Therefore, if you're calculating BMI for a child or teenager, use a dedicated pediatric BMI calculator and discuss the result with an appropriate healthcare professional.

BMI and Age

For adults, the standard BMI category thresholds are generally based on fixed BMI ranges rather than a separate healthy range for every age. However, age can still be relevant when evaluating a person's overall health.

BMI should therefore be considered together with factors such as age, body composition, waist circumference, physical activity, diet, medical history, family history, and existing health conditions. A BMI number by itself cannot provide a complete health assessment.

How to Calculate BMI Correctly

The process is straightforward.

  • Step 1: Measure your weight in kilograms.
  • Step 2: Measure your height and convert it to meters.
  • Step 3: Apply the formula — divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.
  • Step 4: Interpret the result using the standard adult BMI categories.
  • Step 5: Consider the bigger picture — do not use BMI as the only measurement of your health.
For convenience, the [BMI Calculator](/health/bmi-calculator) performs the calculation automatically.

BMI Example

Suppose an adult weighs 80 kg and is 1.80 m tall. The calculation is:

80 ÷ (1.80 × 1.80) ≈ 24.7

A BMI of approximately 24.7 falls within the standard healthy-weight category for adults. However, this result alone does not determine whether the individual is healthy.

What Is a Healthy BMI?

For adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is commonly classified as the healthy-weight range.

But "healthy BMI" should not be interpreted as a guarantee of good health. BMI does not directly measure body fat percentage, muscle mass, fat distribution, fitness level, blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, or overall nutrition.

That is why a comprehensive health assessment requires more than a single number.

How Accurate Is a BMI Calculator?

A BMI calculator can be mathematically accurate while BMI itself still has limitations as a health indicator. The calculation is simply based on height and weight. The limitation comes from what BMI can — and cannot — tell us about the human body.

The NHLBI explicitly states that BMI is a screening tool and does not necessarily diagnose body fatness. Therefore, think of your BMI result as one useful data point, rather than a complete health diagnosis.

Common BMI Calculation Mistakes

  • Using centimeters instead of meters — 175 cm = 1.75 m, not 175 m.
  • Mixing pounds and kilograms — ensure your weight and height units match the calculator's selected system.
  • Using an incorrect formula — the metric formula uses kilograms and meters.
  • Interpreting BMI as body-fat percentage — BMI and body-fat percentage are not the same measurement.
  • Applying adult categories to children — children and adolescents require age- and sex-specific interpretation.

BMI vs. Body Fat Percentage

These two measurements are often confused. BMI is calculated from height and weight. Body fat percentage attempts to estimate how much of your body weight consists of fat.

A person can therefore have a relatively high BMI because of greater muscle mass. For this reason, BMI is best understood as a screening measure rather than a complete body-composition assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good BMI?

For adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally classified as healthy weight under standard BMI categories.

Is BMI the same as body fat?

No. BMI is calculated from height and weight and does not directly measure body fat.

Can I calculate BMI at home?

Yes. You need your height and weight. The CalcWisee BMI Calculator can perform the calculation instantly.

Is BMI different for children?

Yes. Children and teenagers are assessed using BMI-for-age percentiles rather than the standard adult BMI categories.

Can BMI tell me if I'm healthy?

Not by itself. BMI is a screening tool and should be considered alongside other health measurements and personal factors.

Should I try to change my weight based only on BMI?

It's better not to make major health or weight-management decisions based solely on a BMI number. If you have concerns about your weight or health, consider discussing them with a qualified healthcare professional.

What BMI is considered overweight?

A BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 falls into the overweight category for adults under standard BMI classifications.

What is the difference between BMI and healthy weight?

BMI is a calculated index based on height and weight. A "healthy weight" refers to the range of body weights associated with a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for adults.
