About the Speed Calculator
The speed calculator works out average speed and pace from a distance and a time. Speed is distance divided by time and is shown in kilometres or miles per hour; pace is the inverse, time per kilometre or mile, which is what runners and walkers usually track. The calculator works for any activity — running, cycling, walking, rowing or driving — as long as you know the distance covered and how long it took.
How to use it
- 1Enter the distance and choose kilometres or miles.
- 2Enter the time taken in hours, minutes and seconds.
- 3Press Calculate to see average speed and pace.
Worked example
covering 10 km in 50 minutes is an average speed of 12 km/h and a pace of 5:00 per kilometre.
How it works
Formula
Speed = distance / time. Pace is the inverse: time per unit distance.
Who it is for
Runners, cyclists, walkers and students solving distance–speed–time problems.
Why it helps
It converts between the two ways of describing the same effort, speed and pace.
Common use cases
- Finding your average speed on a bike ride
- Converting a race result into pace
- Checking a distance–speed–time homework answer
Frequently asked questions
A:Speed is distance covered per unit time (e.g. km/h); pace is the time to cover one unit of distance (e.g. minutes per km).
A:Yes, switch the distance unit to miles and results still show km/h, mph and m/s.
