About the Magic Mile Calculator
The Magic Mile calculator uses coach Jeff Galloway’s method of predicting race times from a timed one-mile run. Galloway’s race paces per mile are the magic mile time plus 33 seconds for a 5K, × 1.15 for a 10K, × 1.2 for a half marathon and × 1.3 for a marathon. Run the mile at a hard but controlled effort after a warm-up.
How to use it
- 1Run one mile as fast as you can sustain and record the time.
- 2Enter the time in minutes (for example 9 or 8.5).
- 3Read the predicted 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon times.
Worked example
a 9-minute magic mile predicts about 29:40 for 5K, 1:04:18 for 10K, 2:21:34 for a half marathon and 5:06:45 for a marathon.
Common use cases
- Setting realistic race goals
- Choosing a long-run pace
- Tracking fitness between races
