About the Cycling Heart Rate Zone Calculator
The cycling heart rate zone calculator gives five training zones using the Karvonen method, which applies percentages to your heart-rate reserve (maximum minus resting heart rate). Maximum heart rate is estimated as 220 − age. Zones help keep easy rides easy and make interval sessions consistent.
How to use it
- 1Enter your age.
- 2Enter your resting heart rate.
- 3Press Calculate to see the five zones in beats per minute.
Worked example
a 40-year-old with a resting heart rate of 60 has a reserve of 120 bpm; Zone 2 (60–70%) is 132–144 bpm.
How it works
Formula
Zone HR = (Max HR − Resting HR) × Zone% + Resting HR (Karvonen). Max HR = 220 − Age.
Common use cases
- Structuring endurance training
- Setting bike-computer alerts
- Indoor training plans
Frequently asked questions
A:Heart rate zones (Z1–Z5) define training intensities from recovery to maximum effort, each targeting different physiological adaptations.
A:Zone 2 (60–70% max HR) is the endurance zone where the body primarily burns fat and builds aerobic base.
A:Classic endurance training: 80% in Z1–Z2, 20% in Z3–Z5 (80/20 principle).
A:They use the same HR percentages but cycling HR typically runs 10–15 bpm lower than running HR at equivalent effort.
A:Power zones are more precise for training; HR zones are more accessible without a power meter.
