About the Sauna Calories Burned Calculator
The sauna calories calculator estimates the small amount of extra energy your body uses to cool itself in a sauna, using MET values of 1.5–2.5 depending on temperature. Most of the weight lost in a sauna is water, which returns when you rehydrate, so a sauna is not an effective way to lose fat. Limit sessions, drink water and avoid saunas if you have heart problems or are pregnant.
How to use it
- 1Enter your weight in kilograms.
- 2Enter the session length in minutes.
- 3Choose the sauna temperature and press Calculate.
Worked example
15 minutes at 80 °C (2 METs) for a 70 kg person uses about 2 × 70 × 0.25 = 35 kcal.
How it works
Formula
Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours). Sauna MET: ~1.5–2.5 depending on temperature.
Common use cases
- Understanding sauna claims realistically
- Logging recovery sessions
- Comparing with active exercise
Frequently asked questions

A:Most weight loss is water/fluid loss via sweating, not fat burning. Rehydrate after every session.
A:Beginners: 5–10 minutes; experienced users: 15–20 minutes. Never exceed safe limits.
A:Daily sauna use is safe for healthy adults. Research links regular use to cardiovascular benefits.
