About the Swimming Calories Calculator
The swimming calories calculator estimates energy burned by stroke: leisure swimming (5 METs), backstroke (6.5), freestyle (8), breaststroke (10) and butterfly (13). Water resistance makes swimming a full-body workout with little impact on joints. Pace and technique strongly affect the real figure.
How to use it
- 1Enter your weight in kilograms.
- 2Enter swimming time in minutes.
- 3Choose the stroke and press Calculate.
Worked example
30 minutes of freestyle for a 70 kg swimmer burns about 8 × 70 × 0.5 = 280 kcal.
How it works
Formula
Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours). MET by stroke: Butterfly=13, Breaststroke=10, Freestyle=8, Backstroke=6.5.
Common use cases
- Comparing strokes
- Logging pool sessions
- Planning low-impact training
Frequently asked questions

A:A 70 kg person doing freestyle laps for 30 minutes burns approximately 280 calories.
